Entry Door Replacement in Red Deer, AB

Red Deer Custom Windows handles entry door replacement in Red Deer: front doors, back doors, storm doors. We hang steel entry doors and fibreglass entry doors with insulated foam cores. Frames come primed, stain grade, metal-clad or PVC wrapped. The decorative door lites use tempered glass. You get light in the hallway and keep a door that's hard to get through.
Red Deer Custom Windows provides front and back entry door replacement to Red Deer and surrounding Alberta towns, including Lacombe, Sylvan Lake, Blackfalds, Innisfail, Stettler, Rocky Mountain House and Bentley. We've been hanging doors here since 2001. Each entry door we sell carries at least a 10-year warranty, and the 5-year installation warranty covers our side of it. Doors usually show up 3 to 5 weeks after we measure.
Which way the door faces, how much wind it eats and the look you're after. Those three pick the door.
A steel entry door is an insulating foam core wrapped in sheet steel. Strong, secure and the lowest price of the three. The trade-off: steel dents under hail or a careless wheelbarrow, and its skin goes ice cold at minus 30. Pay attention to the thermal break in the frame, the strip that keeps outside cold from running straight through to your hallway.
Fibreglass never rusts, rots or dents, and with a stain it passes for oak from the sidewalk. It rides out a chinook swing from minus 25 to plus 5 in an afternoon without working its seals loose, and the inside face stays warmer under your hand. It costs more. On a sunny, exposed front door, we think it's worth every dollar.
A door lite is the window in the door; a sidelite is the narrow glass panel beside it. Ours are tempered glass on both sides, which shatters into small, dull pieces instead of long shards. Pick frosted or textured glass and a dark entry gets bright without the whole street looking in.
A storm door is the extra outer door. It parks a layer of still air in front of your main door, keeps blowing snow off the threshold and turns into a screen door in July. On a north-facing entry it earns its keep the first minus-30 week.
Back doors take just as much weather as the front, but nobody looks at them until the bottom goes soft. We give them the same treatment, threshold and the wood underneath included. Ask about the one we pulled where the subfloor came out by the handful.
For a Red Deer front door we'd usually pick fibreglass; steel wins on price and makes a great back door. Fibreglass shrugs off hail without denting and stays warmer through a cold snap. Steel runs a few hundred dollars cheaper and takes a lot of abuse. Both have insulated foam cores, and both can take a multi-point lock.
Sun plays a part too. A dark steel door facing south or west bakes in July and freezes in January, and those swings work the seals loose over a few years. Fibreglass barely moves. Out on the jobs we do for window replacement in Stettler, front doors catch wind straight off open fields, and fibreglass is what most people choose.
Replace it when daylight shows around the edges or frost forms on the inside of the door or deadbolt. Same if the bottom of the door or the threshold feels soft, or the door sticks in summer and swings loose in winter. Those signs mean the frame or seal has failed, and new weatherstripping alone rarely fixes them.
A door seal works like the cuff on a good mitt. Your hand stays warm until the wrist gaps, then the cold walks right in, and on a door that gap is usually at the bottom corners. Rot under old back doors is common. On one job we cut the rotten wood out from under an old back door, laid a new board, then hung a new door and a storm door over it. Kicked in during a break-in? Our hail damage and insurance replacement page covers that.
Front door replacement in Red Deer typically costs $1,200 to $4,500 installed in 2026. A national cost guide puts door installation labour at $530 to $1,100, and complete exterior door jobs start around $1,200. A plain steel door sits at the bottom of that range; a fibreglass door with glass panels either side lands near the top.
Labour figures from a June 2026 national cost guide; door ranges from our recent Red Deer jobs. Your written quote depends on the door, glass and frame.

Measure and inspect
The owner measures the opening and checks the frame and floor for rot or sag.
Order the door
Your door gets built to size with the glass and frame you chose, usually in 3 to 5 weeks.
Remove and install
Old door and frame out, rot fixed, new door set level and foamed. Foam it, then trim it.
Adjust and seal
Hinges and lock adjusted until it closes with one finger, outside sealed, old door gone.
Plan on half a day to a full day for a typical entry door. Your doorway stands open only a handful of hours, between pulling the old frame and setting the replacement. Rot repair or sidelites stretch that. Either way, the house gets locked up tight before our crew packs the truck at night.
Usually a new frame. Nearly all of our installs are prehung doors, which arrive already hung in a new frame with a new threshold and weatherstripping. A door slab on its own only works when the old frame is square, solid and the right size, and we rarely see that on doors past 20 years.
Frost forms when warm, damp indoor air hits a cold surface. On an old door that's usually the steel skin, the deadbolt or a worn seal letting cold air in. A new insulated door with a thermal break and fresh weatherstripping keeps those surfaces warm enough to stay dry, even at minus 30 with a north wind.
Yes. Glass in doors has to be safety glass under the Alberta Building Code. Our door lites use tempered glass on both sides, which is heat-treated so it breaks into small, dull pieces instead of sharp shards. It's also several times harder to break than ordinary glass, which burglars tend to find out quickly.
Our entry doors carry at least a 10-year warranty from the maker. Our 5-year installation warranty covers the work itself: the frame, the seal and how the hardware is set. If a door we hung starts to stick or leak, we come back and make it right. We even honoured a year-old quote once.
