Casement, Awning & Tilt-and-Turn Windows in Red Deer, AB

A crank pulls the sash tight against its seal, and tilt-and-turn windows lock at several points. On a windy Red Deer winter night, that's the difference you feel.

Opening styles that seal tight

Red Deer Custom Windows installs casement windows and awning windows across Red Deer, and has since 2001. We put in tilt-and-turn windows too. Quick guide. A casement hangs from a side hinge and cranks outward. An awning is hinged along the top and tips its bottom edge out. A tilt-and-turn opens into the room, either tipped back at the top for air or swung wide like a door. Shut any of the three and the sash squeezes into the weatherstripping, the rubber seal, rather than sliding past it.

Red Deer Custom Windows provides casement and awning window replacement to Red Deer and surrounding Alberta towns, including Lacombe, Sylvan Lake, Blackfalds, Innisfail, Olds, Rimbey and Sundre. Ours go in as triple pane vinyl frames with multi-point locks, measured by our own crew. Every window carries a lifetime warranty, and our 5-year installation warranty covers the work. On the windy side of a house, we'd pick a crank over a slider every time. A slider just sits there.

What you get with every casement job

  • Multi-point locks that grab the sash in two or more spots
  • Folding roto-crank handles that tuck down clear of your blinds
  • Hinge side picked wall by wall, based on where the wind comes from
  • Screens mounted inside, out of reach of hail and wind
  • Ten minutes on the hardware with you before our crew packs up

Types of casement and tilt-and-turn windows

They all seal well. Pick by where the window sits and what you do in that room.

  • Casement Windows

Hinged down one side, a casement opens with a roto-crank. That's the folding handle that sits down by the sill. Because it swings fully open, no other style pulls in as much air, and it scoops up breezes running along the wall. Bedrooms, living rooms, any wall that takes the weather. That's casement country.

  • Awning Windows

An awning hinges at the top and pushes out at the bottom, which lets it shed rain even while it's open. People set them below a big picture window, above a sink or high on a bathroom wall. Small ones are common in basements, where they open above the window well.

  • Tilt-and-Turn Windows

One handle, two jobs. Turn it up and the top tips in a few inches for air; turn it sideways and the whole sash swings into the room for cleaning or a quick way out. Locking points run right around the sash. In our experience nothing else on the market seals quite as tight.

  • Casement and Picture Window Combinations

On its own, a picture window means a single fixed sheet of glass. Flank it with a casement, left, right or both, and the view stays while a breeze still gets in. We put that layout into more Red Deer living rooms than any other, mostly in houses built between 1960 and 1980, often in place of a slider that stopped latching long ago.

  • Egress Casement Windows

Since a casement opens its full width, a fairly small one can still meet the bedroom escape size. In a basement bedroom we build it right at the code minimum and set a proper well outside it. The digging and concrete cutting are on our egress windows page.

Casement vs slider windows: which seals better?

Casement windows seal better than sliders. When you crank a casement shut, the sash presses straight in. Its weatherstripping gets squeezed all the way around. A slider's sash glides past its seals and only brushes them. Windows are tested for air leakage under NAFS, the North American Fenestration Standard, and casements usually score better than same-size sliders.

Think of a good winter mitt. Your hand stays warm until the cuff gapes, and then the cold walks right in. A slider is a mitt with a loose cuff. Hinge a casement on the windward side and the wind itself shoves it tighter. Here's how it plays out on a 2006 two-storey we did in Blackfalds: six of 14 sealed units had fogged, the west-wall sliders came out for casements, the rest stayed, and the job ran about $8,900 in one day.

  • Style | Air seal | Airflow open | Cleaning outside glass
  • Casement | Very good | Full opening | From inside, through the gap
  • Awning | Very good | Partial, works in rain | From outside on upper floors
  • Tilt-and-turn | Best | Tilt or full | From inside, sash swings in
  • Slider | Fair | Half the window | Sash lifts out to clean

Are tilt and turn windows good for Alberta winters?

Yes. Tilt-and-turn windows lock at several points around the sash and press into two rows of seals, which puts them among the tightest windows sold. They also open inward, so snow and ice packed on the outside sill can't freeze them shut. Expect them to cost a few hundred dollars more per window than a casement.

The catch is room. The sash swings inward, so deep sills, blinds and a couch under the window all get in the way. Out where the chinook blows hardest, like the jobs we do for window replacement in Olds, the tilt setting is perfect on a plus 8 February afternoon. Air the room out. Close it before supper, when it drops back to minus 20.

Where awning windows work best

  • Under a picture window, for air without breaking up the view
  • Bathrooms, mounted high where nobody can see in
  • Basements, opening above a window well
  • Any room where you want fresh air during a light rain

How a casement install works

  1. Walk the house

The owner walks each room with you, checks which walls take the wind and asks how you use the space.

  2. Pick the hinge side and hardware

Hinge side, crank style and screens are locked in window by window before anything is ordered.

  3. Install and adjust

The frame goes in level and square, then we adjust the sash until it closes evenly all the way round. Foam it, then trim it.

  4. Show you the hardware

You get a hands-on lesson with the locks, cranks and tilt handles, and a care sheet on the counter.

FAQ

Casement and tilt-and-turn windows FAQ

Which way should a casement window open?

Hinge it on the side the wind usually comes from, which in Red Deer is most often west or northwest. The wind then pushes an open sash toward closed instead of catching it like a sail. When it's shut, the same wind presses the sash harder into the seals. We set that on every order.

Can a casement window be an egress window?

Yes, and often it's the best pick. Under the Alberta Building Code, a bedroom egress window needs a big opening. That means at least 0.35 m² (about 3.8 sq ft) clear, with no side under 380 mm (15 in). A casement opens fully, so a modest one meets that where a slider would have to be far bigger.

How do you clean the outside of a casement window?

Crank the sash open and reach the outside glass through the gap on the hinge side. Most casement hinges slide the sash away from the frame for exactly this reason. Upstairs, a tilt-and-turn is easier still, since the whole sash swings into the room and you clean it like a mirror.

Do casement cranks freeze or break in the cold?

A crank can stick when a thaw is followed by a hard freeze and ice locks the sash. Don't force it, because that strips the gears. Wait for afternoon sun and the ice lets go on its own. If an operator does wear out years down the road, swapping it takes us about ten minutes.

Are awning windows good in rain?

Yes. Awning windows hinge along the top, so an open one works like a small canopy and a light rain drips off the glass instead of into the room. We put them in bathrooms and basements for that reason, so the room still breathes when a July thunderstorm rolls in off the foothills.
